I know I’ve been a little quiet lately, but life has been hectic. For now, I’ve been focusing on my writing and working on my website projects (which is harder than I expected!). But today, I want to dive into a topic that many bloggers/publishers have been asking me about lately: How to retain your WordPress followers.🤔
If you’ve noticed your follower count dropping, especially after recent WordPress updates, you’re not alone. This post will address that issue and provide actionable tips on how to keep your followers engaged and loyal.
How to retain your WordPress followers?
1.Content Matters
When it comes to retaining followers, your content is the first thing you need to evaluate. You might have noticed that many WordPress bloggers don’t stick to a specific niche. That’s okay; I don’t either. But, here’s the catch: not every follower will be interested in every topic you cover. Someone might follow you for a specific post and lose interest if you shift topics too often.
Niche vs. Variety
It’s widely known that blogs focusing on specific niches retain followers better. If you’re struggling to keep your audience, consider focusing on a narrower set of topics. This doesn’t mean you can’t cover a variety of subjects, but try to stay consistent. Readers who followed you for travel tips might not be interested in your political opinions or personal stories.
Speaking of which, controversial content can be a double-edged sword. While it might spark engagement, you risk alienating readers who don’t share your views. If you want to maintain a broad audience, steer clear of divisive topics.
If sticking to a niche makes you feel restricted, don’t stress over losing a few followers. Ultimately, your blog should reflect your passions. However, if you aim to monetize your blog, content consistency is key. Be mindful of what your audience enjoys.
2.Your Attitude Matters More Than You Think
WordPress is more than just a blogging platform -it’s a community. People love engaging with bloggers who are approachable and responsive. One major mistake bloggers make is neglecting their audience or coming across as cold.
If you don’t respond to comments or if your tone seems unkind, followers may feel disconnected. Blogging on WordPress is as much about relationship-building as it is about content creation. A warm, friendly approach can make all the difference. In fact, many of my readers stick around simply because we’ve developed a rapport over the years.
Engage Authentically
Take time to genuinely respond to comments and interact with your readers. You don’t have to respond to every single comment, but showing that you appreciate their engagement can keep followers coming back for more.
3.People Appreciate Your Efforts
Effort matters. Even a small amount of effort to engage with your readers can go a long way in retaining them. Respond to comments, check out their blogs, and engage in meaningful conversations. These simple acts of connection make your readers feel valued, and they’ll be more likely to stay loyal.
What does this effort look like? It can be as simple as liking their comments, responding to questions, or visiting their blogs. Readers appreciate bloggers who acknowledge them.
4.Let It Go: It’s Normal to Lose Followers
Have you tried everything, but your follower count still drops? Take a deep breath -it’s normal.
Bot and Spam Cleanup
One reason for a sudden dip in your follower count could be WordPress clearing out spam accounts. This isn’t something you can control, and it doesn’t reflect on your content.
Glitches in the System
WordPress occasionally has glitches where followers are mysteriously removed. I’ve experienced this firsthand. Followers have told me they stopped receiving updates from my blog, only to realize they’d been automatically unfollowed. If you’ve noticed a sudden drop, it could just be a technical issue.
People Change
Lastly, some followers may simply lose interest over time, and that’s okay. Their interests might shift, or they might have followed you during a specific phase of your content. Don’t take it personally. Your writing will naturally evolve, and so will your audience. It’s part of the process.
Final Thoughts
Retaining followers on WordPress boils down to three main factors: content, attitude, and effort. If you consistently provide valuable content, engage positively with your audience, and show effort in building relationships, you’re already on the right track. However, it’s also important to accept that losing a few followers is completely normal.
